Has your deck seen better days? Has it become the garden eyesore? Maybe you don’t want people to enjoy it anymore as it’s become more of a burden than a beacon. Could it be time to invest in something more long-lasting, more attractive, and more cost-effective?

There are a host of fantastic garden decking ideas out there and maybe going for the longer-lasting composite millboard decking is now high on your agenda. First things first though, you are going to need to get rid of that old decking wood! So, it may be worth putting a plan into action to dispose of the rotten or damaged decking. Find out how below!

Could you sell your old decking wood?

In some cases, your decking wood may not be rotten, it may just be a little damaged or not fulfill the purpose you believed it would. Some deck materials are expected to last many years and as a result, the ones you wish to discard could be another person’s treasure. The purchase of a deck can be seen as expensive to some people so if there is a chance to save on buying brand new deck boards, they may consider yours as a cheaper but just as good alternative. Perhaps look at advertising online to garner interest. Then if there is none, you can move onto any of the other options below.

Give your old decking away

Whether you have tried to sell it and not had any offers, or are just feeling generous, you could try offering it for free. Some of your deck wood could be useful for other DIY projects at the home of someone else. Maybe they could go some way to building another deck and enjoy a second life!

If you put an advertisement online, or even outside your home offering free wood, there will be people showing an interest, it is just whether they totally remove your problem and take it all, or just take a little and leave you with a jumble of odds and ends nobody wants. If that is the case, you could consider the third option on our list

Have your old decking collected

You may have thought about discarding your old wood in the recycling bin, but this is a big NO. Firstly, the time it would take you to dispose of it in your recycling wheelie bin would mean you could be filling it weekly for months to come! Secondly, you could find yourself in trouble with local authorities.

Having it collected by an authorised business that deals with wood recycling or collecting household waste is ideal. Although sometimes costly. Shop around for a few quotes and see how cost-effective it is, and how long you will have to wait to have a collection. Often jobs like this have costs calculated by weight so you could end up surprised at how much it could cost. Search for organisations such as Community Wood Recycling, they will collect the wood for you, and quite often it is cheaper than hiring a skip.

If though, you do not wish to be spending any money, you could consider the next option.

Reuse your old decking wood

Upcycling is a great way to give old items a second life and if the wood isn’t rotten or damaged beyond repair, look at the other DIY plans you have. Could this decking wood work as something else? A bench, picture frames, flower boxes, maybe something for the children? The possibilities could be endless! However, should you not feel creative enough, found anyone to buy your wood, found anyone that wants it, or only had really expensive quotes for a collection. You could try one last thing to get rid of your old decking wood.

Take your old decking wood to a recycling centre.

As we mentioned earlier, you would not be able to put your wood in the household recycling but you can take it to a local recycling centre. Some towns have many within a small radius so you can dispose of your old decking wood quickly and easily.
